East and West collide

OOGLE up the word hot hatch and the name Volkswagen Golf GTi is bound to turn up. Many consider the original Golf GTi to be the father of the hot hatch genre, and its subsequent successors the yardstick for any aspiring hot hatch of that generation. Now in its sixth generation, the Golf GTi picks up the illustrious mantle of its predecessor, the Mark 5, which has been credited for reviving the hot hatch genre. But is the new version of the Golf GTi good enough to take on the hot hatch icon of the East, the Honda Civic Type-R? Click here to read more.

Balancing the perfect 5

THERE must always be a balance in life, and as motor afficiaonados, there must be a balance in cars too.Take the BMW sedans, for example. The 3 is too sporty while the 7 is too big, which leaves us with the 5, which we think is the favourite car in the brand's family. In fact, BMW sold around 5.5 million units of the 5 since it was introduced in 1972. Last year, the 5-Series contributed to half of the company's profits. That is saying a lot for one car model and that was why when BMW announced the F10 (the code name for the new 5-Series) launch, it generated much interest. One magnetic ride!

WE have never driven the Audi R8 V8 extensively, but we just tried the R8 V10 at the Sepang International Circuit and we think it is a supercar which anybody can enjoy.A supercar is normally something which is super low and ultra wide, making it ridiculous to drive on the streets of Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur or the busy parts of Petaling Jaya. You can, but there might be a kapchai or two stuck on the wide body or a pedestrian hooked to the rear spoiler. Manual Alza still makes sense

PERODUA can never do wrong, and despite criticisms about the Alza, the Rawang based company is still getting many orders for this small MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). After nearly three months, about 20,000 bookings have been chalked and the company is working hard to deliver the cars, especially for the Chinese New Year festivities. After being impressed with its practicality as a city car, we drove the manual version of the Perodua Alza Premium.Since it is a premium, the unit sports a rear spoiler, front foglights and an SXi badge at the back denoting its premium price tag. Finesse versus budget sense

SALES of multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) are still growing with positive response for the latest Perodua Alza and the Proton Exora. Toyota is undeniably a renowned manufacturer of a variety of MPVs - from the entry-level Avanza, unique Isis, generic Ipsum/Picnic, popular Wish and Estima right up to the cult-status Alphard and its near-identical twin, the latest Vellfire. High tech combined with elegance

What better way to introduce the new and long awaited E-class models than inviting several members of the media to sample the E200 CGI Elegance, and E300 Advantgarde, through a media drive to Terengganu. Even though the E-class adopts an angular body which identifies itself with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range, it still keeps its defining four-eye headlight arrangement with the addition of LED-daytime running lights. Not only is the E-class sharper looking on the outside, the quality of its interior is in a class of its own. Click here to read more.

Enter the Kriss successor

AFTER 13 years, Modenas has finally come out with the replacement for its number one moped, Kriss. The CT110 uses a new chassis and body, but with an updated 111cc 4-stroke SOHC single engine from the Kriss. The two engines have the same power output (8.8hp), but while the Kriss engine was designed to last 10 years, the CT's updated engine should go for 15. Modenas invited us to have a go at the CT110 on the new Ayer Keroh go-kart/kaprix track. Click here to read more.
