Tan Chong today unveiled to a a select group of bankers and journalists its Nissan Navara 2.5, a premium twin-cab 4x4 light truck with automatic transmission.
The Navara is almost a household name in Australia but this is its premiere in Malaysia. For Nissan franchise holder, Tan Chong, the lure to enter the sector for automatic transmission twin-cab 4x4’s is the 23 per cent growth year-to-date 2007 to 2008.![]()
Longer, wider, and taller than its competitors in the twin-cab light truck sector, the Navara will be the biggest in the twin-cab 4x4 sector. Interior dimensions are said to be also the biggest in class. Exactly how much bigger internal and external capacity will be announced at the official launch on November 5th in conjunction with the Nissan Technology Exhibition at one Utama from Nov 5-9.
Price is pending approval from the relevant government agency but since this is one of the most competitive sectors in the Malaysian car, prices would have to be within the range of RM105,000 to RM110,000.![]()
The Navara is Tan Chong’s first automatic transmission in the Nissan twin-cab range and it complements the Nissan Frontier that is offered only with manual transmission. This means that Nissan will soon have two truck lines in the 4x4 twin-cab sector.
“The Navara will be the most powerful in the sector. The new YD25DDTI engine produces 174 ps @ 4,000 rpm and the peak torque is 403 Nm @ 2,000 rpm.” said Chris Tan, General Manager, product planning and marketing, Edaran Tan Chong.![]()
It’s also the only twin-cab in the market with xenon lamps (high-intensity discharge or HID) and the beam can be adjusted to compensate for cargo tilt.
The top-in-class power is derived from the 2nd generation common-rail high pressure diesel fuel injector system and from the variable vane turbocharger.![]()
Motoring journalists at the launch were allowed to drive the new truck on two rounds of the 1.5 km test circuit. After the drive, I wonder why the big boss, Datuk Tan Heng Chew, didn’t buy a tiny 10,000 square feet or so of extra land so that there would be a bit of a run-off area and sand trap at the end of the 700 metre high-speed straight.
Every one of the Navara trucks are tested on this 12 section test track where the tester will check if there are excessive levels of twenty one different types of noise possibilities. This is about the most comprehensive test I’ve seen at a factory for 4x4 vehicles and according to Datuk Dr Ang Bon Beng, executive director, Edaran Tan Chong Motor, it’s driven by several factors.![]()
Firstly, it’s to improve the plant’s achievement in the area of vehicle running dynamic performance according to an annual inspection by Nissan Motor. Overall, this added element of dynamic testing has led to a high customer Satisfaction rating in the JD Power’s annual Initial Quality Survey.
So keep the 5-9 November dates free to make your own inspections at the One Utama Nissan Technology Square.
