What is it with Malaysians and two-door cars?

I just drove the new VW Scirocco last weekend and I think it shows just how good VW is at making performance cars.

The new Scirocco has a good engine, even better transmission and a near perfect handling. The sexy styling is a bonus of course.

I think I am not the only one who thinks the Scirocco is a good car. Autocar UK and AutoBild named it their Car of the Year, and those two are not cap-ayam magazines.

But typical of Malaysians, after they have finished oooh-ing and waaah-ing the Scirocco, they will say "Aiyaaah, but it's a two door car laaa" and walk away.

Sigh…what is wrong with a two-door car?

The Europeans and Americans bought two-door cars by the millions while we here in Malaysia balked at the thought of buying one.

In fact, many of these Malaysians claim they are die hard car fans, but the fact that they hate two-door cars and end up buying the Vios or the Myvi proves how fake these petrol heads are.

Of course if you can only afford a car and you need to use it as a family car, I will gladly understand but most of them are single, or married without kids, and they are all below 40s.

So why do you need all the space for?

I always have a two-door car, and my logic is simple. I take corners every single day; the requirement to use the back seat will arise maybe 4 days in a month.

So, will you sacrifice your g-force fun for something you hardly ever use?

A two-door car is not that bad actually. Many of us can live with it; heck, I even took my family back to Muar or Kuantan once in a while in the Satria Neo. My two kids never really complain about the small seat and the wife is extra happy as there is no door at the back for them to toy around with.

And yes, I took the Scirocco back to Muar with the family in tow. The car performed superbly well - comfortable, spacious and practical. If I have my own ways, I'll tint the rear glass so that people can't see we have kids at the back. :)

The only time I had to make a U-turn was when I planned to drive up to Penang with the family in the FOUR-door Honda Type R.

The Honda was ridiculously uncomfortable, I think I broke a few bones driving it around KL (hats off to those who can drive that car everyday). The family too was grumbling and I decided enough was enough. I made U Turn at Sungai Buluh, went home and swap the Type R with the Satria Neo.

So Malaysians, stop complaining about two-door cars. This is a car which places looks and handling higher than practicality.

If you are happy with your dinky four-door saloon, by all means, go ahead. I will not stop you from buying your Vios TRD or Myvi SE. Put in the biggest wheels that you can find and lower the car to the max until you scrap the tarmac.

Just make sure you move to the side and don't hog the road when we want to take that delicious 3rd gear corner.

I have to agree, practicality comes into the picture too but well, thank God my mother in law drives a Satria. Hahahaha! So she can never complain!

Anyway, Proton should serious come out with a four-door hatchback with sporty styling, like the Neo. To reengineer the Neo and turn it into a 4-door car is a bit too late, perhaps later on Proton can come out with one?

Style it like the current Honda JAzz. I think that is one awesome looking car! How it drives is another issue la!

I just love two door cars, am single 33 years of age and have been driving 4 door automatics all my life and just got sos sick of it. Planning to get a two door car, no more obligations towards family members, friends or nephews , nieces g'friends.....bla bla bla.

However performance sports cars still out of range wouldn't want funny looks from strangers everytime I step out and also bosses...... but contemplating on what to go for:

criteria 150k below. any recommendations????

Alfa / Fiat / Peugeot GT175/ unlaunched CRZ / VW  / yamaha fz6 and 600RR have crossed my mind,

but unfortunately I have omit the last two becasue of slipstream collision with a new camry last december.  Spent months wobbling and limping, okay now but my steel horse is still recuperating at tha local mechanic's place, engine splitted sshh!!!

So i guess i'll have to opt for a steel chariot  instead.....saga-kancil-satria- civic ek small v - civic 04 BIG V  2.0............allfour doors and auto cept the satria which was only for  6 months before  I went overseas and ended with a 150cc scoot. SO any recommendations at the 150k - + budget... Kindly advice... long termmmmm.......

2 door cars are not convenient to accomodate the aging Mother in law. its common in Malaysian culture to have to take the MIL around for shopping and outings. Heck, Mother in laws even live with the children these days. westeners do not believe in such practises hence by the time the son/daughter are in their 30s their free to do whatever they like.
Spot on Bangau, looks like VW Malaysia had put on some senses and brought in a two door car, not like what they did with the Golf. Another sad product is the Suzuki Swift Sport, the old fellas decided to bring that model in as a four door, unlike what it was designed with the first place, a nice sporty looking two door hatch.
I just bought a satria neo cps (a), its 2 doors of course. 3 kids and wife fit nicely inside the cabin and enjoying every corner ahead. My eldest son kept on asking about missing tyre strech sound, not like out Naza Citra that we are enjoying before. I felt like the motto is all correct, every bend look like a straight lane. For those enjoying taking sharp corner, got for hatchback and they usually come in two doors.huhuhu...
As far as I agree that in fact, a two door car is dream to many car enthusiast. However, given us living in Malaysia, where the ratio of car price and our salary is relatively higher compared to countries mentioned ie. europe/ us region, many of us opted for a reasonable and practicle saloon. If a typical engineer in Malaysia can earn around 8k while a scirocco cost about 120000, I believe Malaysia car market scenario deviates from what it appears to be now.
I have two 2 door cars which are classics in age,a BMW 635csi and a Ford TX3 and I love to drive them more than my Perdana v6 simply because they are more exciting to drive despite their age .
I've been driving many types of cars/vehicles...Saga, Gen 2, Persona, Waja, MyVi, Viva, Kancil, Kelisa, Kenari, Accord, Avanza, Kembara, Arena, Exora and many more... Of course all of them are not mine... I eventually end up buying a Proton Satria Neo as my first car - a birthday present for myself. And of course, I'm targetting the Peugeot 308 GT & VW Scirocco as my next collection. I'm a very proud owner of a 2-door machine! Most 2-door cars are focusing on performance [engine (and transmission)], ride and handling, and of course; styling (which people would have different perceptions, definitions & appreciation). My friends are always excited when I requested them to drive my two-door car everytime we went outing, they just love the "feel" when simply cruising in it. And, in my case, they just love the Lotus ride & handling IN THE TWO-DOOR CAR! This only leads me to think just what Peugeot 308 GT & VW Scirocco will offer me in terms of ride, handling and performance!!! Hezeri is sooo right about the bonus sexy styling...I'm still not used with the envious glances everytime I'm driving my two-door ride!!! Is it just me?
Hezeri, the Peugeot 308 GT is my first 2 door car that I own, after owning cars like Proton Iswara Aeroback, Proton Wira & Hyundai Sonata. You know what? You're right to say that its more fun with the 2 door than 4 doors. My wife and I have 2 kids and a maid at home and we have 2 more MPVs that is suitable for the long distant drive. However, we end up using the 2 door vehicle more around Klang Valley because, my kids think its more cool in the 2 door hatch. And... so do I.... Wife grumbles a little at the beginning, but end up still saying that the car is a good car for everyday usage.... The whole family enjoys the thrill of riding in a 2 door.... and that is "quality life!"
I also don't understand why Malaysian don't like 2 doors car, in fact my requirement for a car is that it must be a 2 doors car or a coupe design. I hate it when people say buy Toyota, buy Honda, don't buy continental car, don't buy Korean car, don't buy 2 doors car, no resale value la this la that la, in fact because of them following the trend that cause those car no resale value in the first place, and I hate that almost all the car sold in Malaysia is auto and not manual, and the reason given is traffic jam, and because of them you won't be able to buy manual car. You wanna buy Civic manual need to buy Civic Type R, wanna buy Lancer manual cannot must get Lancer Evolution X, just don't understand why Malaysian have such mindset.
