Goodyear dealers reject regrooved tyres

Head of traffic police and public order (Selangor) Che Husin Che Omar, Suret, Goodyear Malaysia Bhd managing director Nasution Abdul Rahman and Maziun Hamid, representative of the Goodyear Bumiputra Dealers Association, at the pledging ceremony.

GOODYEAR dealers are ensuring that bald and regrooved tyres are not sold, stocked or displayed on their premises.

Goodyear has a network of 257 dealers nationwide.

This is in line with the ban on the retail of such tyres by the Road Safety Department (JKJR) and the Ministry of Transport.

“As of Jan 1 this year, snow, used and regrooved tyres cannot be imported into Malaysia,” said JKJR director-general Datuk Suret Singh during a pledging ceremony by 36 members of the Goodyear Bumiputra Dealers Association at the Grand Bluewave Hotel in Shah Alam last Tuesday.

According to Suret, regrooved tyres – which are produced by carving new treads into a worn tyre to create more tread depth – together with bald tyres account for 15 per cent of road accidents nationwide.

“Today, these dedicated Goodyear dealers pledge to support JKJR in this move. Also, posters, banners and brochures will be placed in their outlets to educate consumers and increase awareness about how detrimental these tyres can be to road safety,” said Suret, who also emphasised that all car passengers must wear seat belts and motorcyclists must fasten their helmets snugly.

“Besides avoiding summons, such safety measures can save thousands of lives in Malaysia each year.”

Also, motorists can stop at any Goodyear Autocare or Servitekar outlet for a free 10-point check, which includes an inspection of a car’s tyre pressure and wear, power steering fluid, air filter, spark plugs, engine oil, transmission fluid, radiator coolant, brake pads and fluid, battery terminal connection and water, as well as fan and air-conditioning belts.
